Mexican 75 – A Tequila and Champagne Cocktail

If any of you know me in the slightest you know my drink of choice is either a tequila or Champagne.

That’s why I decided to combine the best of both worlds in this Mexican 75 tequila cocktail! And it couldn’t be any simpler to make.

And guys, this drink is the PERFECT balance of light and bubbly but still so full of that tangy flavor you want from a margarita.

Whether for a special celebration or just a weeknight happy hour, do yourself a favor and make this epic cocktail.

A glass of Mexican 75 is garnished with a lime peel.

What is a Mexican 75?

A “Mexican 75” is a tequila twist on the classic French 75.  Instead of lemon juice and gin, you use lime juice and tequila. It is then finished off with bubbly to give you a light and refreshing tequila Champagne cocktail with a bit of a kick.

Tequila, champagne, agave nectar, and limes are the ingredients for this drink.

Ingredients

  • Tequila. For the best flavor, choose a reposado, as it’s been aged longer with a sweeter flavor than Blanco (or silver tequila). If you like more of a whiskey taste, an anejo is great, as well. Be sure to choose a good quality tequila that you like the taste of. (Lunazul, Espolon, and Lalo are some of my favorite brands for mixing into tequila cocktails!)
  • Lime juice. Trust me, you want fresh-squeezed lime juice. You’ll need 1 to 2 limes for each glass.
  • Agave nectar. This natural sweetener complements the lime and tequila, and it’s easy to find at the grocery store. You might see it called agave syrup. You can also sub in a simple syrup, as well.
  • Champagne. Choose a Champagne or sparkling wine based on how sweet you like your drink. A good prosecco or brut adds bubbles without making it too sugary or tart.

How to Make a Mexican 75

Please see the recipe card below for ingredient amounts and more detailed instructions.

1. Mix the Ingredients

Add ice to fill a cocktail shaker. Then, carefully pour in the tequila, lime juice, and agave nectar. The Champagne is added latershaking and carbonation don’t mix.

Shake the drink ingredients for about 10 to 20 seconds. You’ll feel the outside of the shaker get cold.

Tequila is added to a shaker with ice.

2. Prep the Glass

Unlike margaritas, this drink is made for an 8 oz. Champagne flute (these are some of my favorite stemless Champagne flutes if you’re worried about spilling!)

I prefer salt on the rim of my glass when I’m enjoying a Mexican 75, but if you like your cocktails a bit sweeter, you can use sugar.

The easiest way to do this is to cut a slit in a quarter of a lime wedge and run it around the top of the glass. Then, dip the rim of your Champagne flute into a plateful of either salt or sugar. (Here’s more info on how to salt a rim.)

3. Strain and Serve

After you’ve shaken the drink and prepared the rim, use a strainer to pour the cocktail evenly into the cups. Then, fill the rest of the way with Champagne.

Garnish this delicious cocktail with a wedge of lime, if preferred.

Champagne is being poured into a flute full of tequila.

Is it OK to mix Champagne and tequila?

Yes! You can definitely mix Champagne and tequila. In fact, it’s a surprisingly delicious combination. Just be sure not to shake the Champagne if making a martini-type drink.

Recipe Tips

  • Look up. Grab a good tequila you like the flavor of.
  • DIY. Squeeze the limes yourself for the best results.
  • Wait for it. Add the Champagne AFTER shaking the cocktail.
  • Chill out. Be sure you shake the cocktail until the shaker is cold on the outside.
  • Be salty. Don’t skip the salted rim!

    1. Hi Robin! I haven’t tried it, but I don’t see why you couldn’t combine the tequila, lime, and agave ahead of time, then mix in the champagne just before serving. Let me know how it goes!

Mexican 75 is an amazing cocktail, and I enjoy drinking it with my mates. I got to know about this drink from a close friend of mine, and ever since then, I’ve been making this drink daily. It’s great for me.

I found this on pinterest while looking for cocktain recipies. This was delicious!! I used repasado instead of silver tequila but it didn’t disappoint. I also added a little margarita mix to give it a little more sweetness. Great cocktail.

    1. It depends on your champagne tastes… I like a drier champagne and tend to go for Mumm Napa Brut (or any other brut.) If you like your drinks a bit sweeter, “Cuvee” champagnes (or sparkling wines) and most Proseccos will work great! I would use a decent champagne (try not to go under $10/bottle) since it does make up the majority of the drink!! Hope you enjoy it!!

  3. As a true margarita gal, I am so thankful for this recipe in a time of champagne. This is exactly how I’d like to start the new year!
