Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits

I had no idea it was feasible, much less so EASY to recreate that buttery, garlic-filled, and cheesy flavor of Red Lobster’s Cheddar Bay Biscuits at home!

But thanks to simple ingredients, like the use of a package of Bisquick (which is just a mix of flour, leavening and a little salt!) you can have these any night of the week.

What makes this copycat Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits recipe so special (and as good as the real thing)?

  • They come together fast, thanks to Bisquick! (So you can skip gathering up flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, etc.)
  • They have the perfect ratio of dry to wet ingredients so they turn out fluffy AND moist.
  • Easy drop biscuits are so simple to whip up and throw in the oven.
  • The best part—that garlic butter sauce… *MUAH* Need I say more?!
Bisquick, cheddar cheese, milk, butter, eggs, and seasonings are the ingredients to this dish.

Ingredients

  • Bisquick. You can either use a regular or a gluten-free blend from the grocery store. Don’t have Bisquick? Learn how to make your own Homemade Bisquick
  • Garlic powder. This mixes easier into the batter and the garlic butter than fresh. But feel free to use garlic cloves (which I personally like the flavor better!). Just make sure to finely mince the garlic.
  • Milk. While whole dairy milk and buttermilk will give you the best results, you can use whatever type you prefer. If using a plant-based alternative just make sure it’s full-fat.
  • Cheese. Sharp cheddar cheese will give you the most authentic flavor. But you can sub in another variety if you’d like.
  • Seasonings. If you want these to taste like Red Lobster, choose an Italian seasoning blend. Or, stick with just dried basil.

How to Make Cheddar Bay Biscuits with Bisquick

Please see the recipe card below for ingredient amounts and more detailed instructions.

1. Make the Biscuit Batter

In a large bowl, mix together the Bisquick, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, and salt. Stir until everything is evenly distributed.

Carefully pour in the milk, whisked eggs, and butter that has been melted and cooled to room temperature. Use a spatula to stir until a soft dough forms.

Finally, stir in the cheese. Don’t overwork the biscuit dough or they won’t be fluffy.

Cheese is stirred into the batter.

2. Scoop and Bake

Use a measuring cup or large spoon to scoop about ¼-cup of batter onto a prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper. You should end up with 12 biscuits.

Bake the biscuits for 14 to 16 minutes in a preheated 375℉ oven. They should be just starting to turn golden brown around the edges.

12 biscuits are dropped on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

3. Make the Butter Topping

While the biscuits are in the oven, melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter in a small, microwave-safe bowl.

Carefully whisk in the other ½ teaspoon of garlic powder and the Italian seasoning. Set it aside until the biscuits are ready.

Butter is brushed on the freshly baked biscuits.

4. Top with the Butter and Serve

When the biscuits are just out of the oven, brush the tops with the buttery topping using a pastry brush. This allows the butter to really melt into the biscuits.

Serve the biscuits right away with some fresh parsley.

Notes

Prep-Ahead Instructions:
You can make these cheesy biscuits a day early, just warm them up in the oven before serving.
Storage Directions:
Fortunately, leftover biscuits keep really well for a few days if you store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To reheat, put them in the toaster oven or regular oven so they get nice and crispy on the outside.  However, placing them in the microwave heats them up quite a bit faster.
